Step by Step tutorial on how to register your free .np domain name from Mercantile company Nepal.Updated 2015!

So, In Nepal, there's a way to register a domain name free of cost.For that you must be a citizen of the country holding a citizenship or national id card. Your passport or driving license is also valid.
This is done by the Mercantile Company located in Daurbar Marg, Kathmandu.Below is the updated description about how you can register your domain name.


Go to www.register.mos.com.np


The very first thing is that you must read the terms and conditions carefully.
If you do not read it, you are likely to commit a mistake and have unnecessary delay or to say your request for new domain name may not be accepted.

So go through the terms and condition carefully. Everything is clearly stated there about what you can do and what you cannot.

After you go through the terms and conditions, check for the domain name availability.

Type in your desired domain name,

For example: if you name is sujan maharjan, you can have your domain name as

Sujan.mhj.com.np or

Mhj.sujan.com.np

Sujanmaharjan.com.np etc.

The key is that only alphanumeric, dot (.) and dash (hyphen) are accepted. The first and last characters should not be a dash (hyphen).

After you have your desired domain name status available, you drag it to the basket.

Now the next step is to choose a username for your account. You will have your own control panel from where you can manage/edit/modify your domain’s status and more..

I prefer you enter your first name of your email that you are going to use to register the domain name.

For example: if you have sujanmaharjan99@gmail.com as your email id, use sujanmaharjan99 as your username for your domain name’s control panel.

Then type in your email address and again type in for conformation.

After everything is cool, hit the register button below. 

You will receive a conformation mail from Mercantile Inc.

Login to your mail account and follow exactly what it tells you.

Your mail will be something like this:



Dear Sujan Maharjan,

Thank you for registering. NP domain registration service is provided by Mercantile Communications completely free of charge.
Your requested domain is currently inactive. You will need to submit a few documents in order to activate the domain. Please click on the link given at the bottom of this email and upload the necessary documents as stated below.

Domain request for personal usage

1. A scanned copy of both sides of the applicant's citizenship certificate or passport or driving license or voter's card, or

2. NRN ID Card for Non-Resident-Nepalese, or

3. Nepalese resident visa for foreign nationals.

Domain request for Company or Organization

1. A scanned copy of an application letter written in the company/organization's letter-head pad, stamped and signed by an authorized officer. 
2. A scanned copy of the company/organization registration certificate issued by Office of t he Company Registrar, Nepal. 

Please note that only JPG or PNG extensions are accepted for uploading.

Your domain will be activated within three working days. Your request for this domain will be rejected if you have not submitted all the necessary documents as stated above in this email. Once a request is rejected, you will have to reapply for the same domain or a new domain.

Conform it preparing all the required documents. Make your scanned national id card, front copy and the back in one single jpeg image, sized not exceeding more than 800kb or as stated while going through the further form filling process. You should rename the scanned image as
( sujan.mhj.com.np_citizenship.jpg )
It must contain the name of your domain name that you chose before.
Also you will require to choose a password for your domain name's control panel.

So, your username will be like: sujanmaharjan99  and password will be like: ************


You will be asked to provide your real name, last name, address, telephone contact number etc.
Those are all the easy stuffs which you can do all by yourself easily.


Now what may trouble you is about a section where you see Name Servers written. You will see Primary Name Server, Secondary Name Server and Tertiary Name Server.

What it means is that your domain name must point towards the hosting servers that you are going to host your website.

So now what does hosting means?  If you are familiar with it then its cool. But if not then it means that a place or a hard drive space where all of your text, image and rest of the multimedia files that are required to build your website stays. It must run 24 hours a day and 7 days a week all the time so that anyone from any where can view your website any time.

There are lots of company that provide us hosting facilities. They charge us some amount of money according to the size of your hosting account. That is like 1gb for Rs 3000, 2 gb for 6000 and so on. Im just giving you the examples. There are a lot who are giving away in cheaper rates and there are lots who are giving away for free too.
Free??? OMG, why would anyone pay when you are getting it for free!!!
But remember, free means free. It ain't gonna be like paid. You may or may not miss the features.

If you are going for paid hosting, then search for it, there are tons. If you are sticking with the free then there are tons too.
Now the question arises like which one should i go for?
In my case, i'm using a free web hosting site called Hostinger which is giving free space of 2gb for all.
You can sign up using your gmail. After you do, you will get the information about its server adress which you use it while registering domain name from mercantile.

Primary Name server : ns1.hostinger.co.uk
Secondary Name server : ns2.hostinger.co.uk
Tertiary Name server: ns3.hostinger.co.uk

Well, now after you fill in the address for name servers and uploaded all the required information and documents, you will get another e-mail from mercantile like:

Dear Sujan Maharjan,

Your request for domain sujan.mhj.com.np has been approved and its status has been upgraded to ‘Under Process’.
You will receive an email once the domain is registered.
